What is Diethylstilbestrol (DES)? Diethylstilbestrol is a type of estrogen. It is used for the treatment of urinary incontinence in dogs. At higher doses may also be used to treat prostate hypertrophy (enlargement), certain types of cancers, and reproductive conditions.Who is it for? Diethylstilbestrol is a synthetic form of estrogen. Diethylstilbestrol is thought to increase the responsiveness of the smooth muscle of the bladder neck to nerve activity, tightening the muscle and preventing leakage of urine. Diethylstilbestrol is also thought to suppress the effects of testosterone, which is helpful against diseases dependent upon the presence of testosterone. Is there a generic equivalent available? This is a compounded form of the generic form.How is it given? Diethylstilbestrol is given by mouth. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian, as the dosage is generally reduced after the initial few days of treatment. If you have difficulty giving the medication, consult your veterinarian. This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.What results can I expect? Diethylstilbestrol will not cure incontinence but can help decrease the amount and frequency of "accidental" urination. It may take a number of days to see an effect.
