{mosimage}Eagles birds are intriguing birds of prey. They are the predators of the sky and they are at risk of being added to the endangered species list. Here's everything you need to know about Eagles birds.
The Characteristics of an Eagle
Eagles are characterized as the raptors of the sky. They have a large wing span and are covered in layers of feathers. Despite its name as a Bald Eagle, the eagle is not really bald, but has a white crown of feathers. They are hunters and meat eaters. Eagles birds are fierce, but they are by no means large birds. With over 40 species of Eagles in existence, the largest is 35 inches long and weighs 12 pounds. That may not sound impressive, but they can carry up to half of their weight and they often do. Eagles have sharp toe claws, called talons. They use their talons, along with their keen eyesight and ability to quietly sneak up on their prey to capture, kill and eat a variety of animals.
What Do Eagles Birds Eat?
Eagles regularly feast on insects, snails, snakes, birds, fish, bats, rodents, lizards and rabbits. These are all fairly easy for the Eagles to hunt, capture and eat all on their own. But they also rely on the effort of others by feasting on the carcasses of dead animals. Sometimes the carcasses are leftovers from a previous predator; other times they are simply road kill. But regardless of how they died, the Eagles birds have no problem finishing the job of picking the bones clean.
Endangered Eagles
{mosimage}Though Eagles birds are currently not listed on the endangered species list; they are classified as "threatened." Strong efforts have been and continue to be made to keep Eagles from becoming a distant memory. Some Eagles lay one eye while other lay up to three eggs. They return to the same nest each year to reproduce and the nests can weigh hundreds of pounds after many years of continued use.
Types of Eagles Birds
The Philappine Eagle is the world most rare tropical Eagle. They are becoming extinct because their tropical homes are being destroyed and they have no place to go. The White-tailed Eagle is Europe's biggest Eagle and it resides in Norway. The only two kinds of Eagles Birds you will spot in North America, however, are the Golden Eagle and the Bald Eagle (the U.S. symbol of strength and beauty.)
