Toucan birds are tropical birds that have made a cameo appearance on cereal boxes and cartoons. They are easily recognized by their massive and colorful beaks.
Looking at toucan birds
Toucan birds are tropical birds that have a black body with yellow, blue, green, red and white feathers. Toucan birds also have massive beaks that are generally just as long as their bodies. The beak is thick and yellow and is found in all 40 species of the toucan bird.
Toucan birds have a hard time flying because their beaks are so large. These birds have a much easier time getting around by foot, hopping from tree to tree. The toucan bird lives in the jungle and is a prominent figure in South America.
What about that beak?
Toucan birds have massive beaks and the reason that the birds need such large beaks is puzzling to scientists. The beak is bigger than the bird so it looks like it could be used as a weapon. However, many believe that the toucan bird does not use its beak to harm other animals or humans. For starters, toucan birds are much bigger than other birds that live in its habitat so they don't really need an extra defense mechanism to help defend themselves against predators. Their beaks also aren't particularly sharp, so it's probably not used to pierce competitors.
Some say toucan birds use their beaks to attract females, but this theory is also debated because the female toucan bird also has a large beak. So, is the toucan bird's beak used for gather fruits and veggies? That's possible, but many other birds with much much smaller beaks are perfectly capable of gathering enough food to sustain themselves.
Toucan birds have such large beaks that their beaks are not fully developed by the time they leave the nest. The toucan bird leaves the nest after eight or nine weeks, but will not have a full sized beak until it’s been gone for a couple of months.
Funny birds
Toucan birds are funny birds not only because they have huge beaks, but because they're also playful and tend to act like the class clown. When the toucan bird is ready to mate, it plays a game of catch with its prospective mate. It tosses a berry to its partner and then the partner tosses it right back.
Toucan birds are very loud and can be heard bellowing in the forest. They're playful and can cause quite a ruckus. Toucan birds also love to eat, but can't eat seeds because their bodies are able to digest them.
