Read About Sea Birds

Sea birds are considered to be birds that hang out and live near beaches and seas.

Sea birds

No one bird can be described as the definitive sea bird because there are just too many sea birds to let one represent the entire group. There are such a wide variety of sea birds that they can't even be defined according to climate -- some of them live in cold areas and others live in warm areas. The one uniting factor that sea birds have in common is their love of the sea. All sea birds live near oceans and seas.

Gulls

Gulls are sea birds that humans commonly think of as pesky picnic robbers. Gulls live in all kinds of climates, but the ones that live near humans are known for aggressively grabbing food and other tasty items while on the fly.

These sea birds come in three varieties. The herring gull, the western gull and what is commonly referred to as the California gull. All of these gulls love to eat fish, which is why they hang out by water. Gulls will also pick up dead animals that wash up on the shore. They're not picky.

Gulls like to travel in packs and they will build their nests in colonies that are covered in tall grasses and other soft foliage. They have a high survival rate because they are a group of sea birds that protect each other from predators and other invaders.

Puffins

Puffins are sea birds that aren't always thought of as sea birds because they live in cold climates. Puffins look a lot like penguins and are frequently mistaken as penguins. There are four different species of puffins and they live near the cool Atlantic waters, in the North Pacific or on the northern coast of Alaska.

The name of the sea bird, puffin, is comical to many westerners, but the birds got the name for a reason. These sea birds were named puffins because the word meant "fatling" and these birds are chunky because they need to keep warm.

The largest puffin is called the tufted puffin. These sea birds are charismatic because they have this funky looking poof on top of their heads. When the tufted puffin is in the middle of mating season, it raises these feathers to attract a mate.

Like gulls, these sea birds love to eat fish. In fact, every meal a puffin eats is made up of some kind of seafood. Puffins store fish in their beaks so that they can minimize the number of times they have to hunt in a day. Their large beaks allow these sea birds to also carry fish back to their young.
