Read About Bird Perch

The bird perch is a great way to keep your bird healthy and entertained. Here’s everything you need to know about the bird perch.

Why do I need a bird perch?

Though we usually think “wings” when we think about a bird’s anatomy, it’s incredibly important to take care of a bird’s feet. In the wild birds use their feet for taking of and landing, moving around and perching. When a bid is captive it doesn’t have as many opportunities to exercise its legs, which is why you need to buy at least one bird perch for your bird cage.

If you get the right bird perch, your bird will use its bird perch as an exercise tool as well as a resting place.

What kind of bird perch should I get?

For starters, you shouldn’t get just one bird perch. A bird needs a variety of perches to exercise its legs. Usually cages come with at least one perch, many times it’s a wooden perch, which is fine, but your bird needs a variety. A variety of perches allows you bird to get more exercise because it will move from perch to perch. Also, changing resting materials (from wood to rope for example) changes the impact the bird is placing on its delicate bones. This can help protect the bird from getting arthritis and other bone ailments.

Bird perch reminders

Getting a bird perch is pointless if it’s going to be harmful to the bird or if the bird has no interested in using it. So, when you get ready to buy the bird perch, keep a couple of things in mind.

One, get the right size of bird perch. You wouldn’t go out and buy yourself a bike that was 10 times too big, so don’t get your bird a bird perch that doesn’t fit. Birds view the bird perch as a toy and they can’t manage it if it’s too big. Make sure the bird perch you choose will fit your bird’s feet. A little bird cannot grab onto a perch that has the girth of a parrot-sized perch and a parrot won’t try to daintily stand on a perch that’s meant for a chickadee. This will eat up any empty space between the front and back of the bird’s feet and force the bird’s nails to touch. This is not comfortable. You need to make sure you find a bird perch that is.
