Read About Outdoor Aviaries

To keep your birds happy, keep them outside! Here’s everything you need to know about outdoor aviaries.

What is an outdoor aviary?

If you’ve been to a zoo, you’ve probably seen a few outdoor aviaries. Made to house birds of all kinds, outdoor aviaries are basically large cages. If you live in an area with warm weather year round, outdoor aviaries are perfect for your pet birds to enjoy the great outdoors without having the opportunity to fly away. Even if you live someplace where it gets too chilly for your birds to be outside in the winter or fall, you can still have an outdoor aviary for your pets to live in during the warm spring and summer months.

What kinds of outdoor aviaries are there?

There are a variety of style and sizes of outdoor aviaries available for your pet. Whether you’re looking for a big aviary for lots of birds or larger birds or a smaller aviary to house your pets, you can find them all!

Some outdoor aviaries attach right to the side of your house while others stand alone. Most aviaries are made from a mixture of products like wire and wood or plastic. Some are longer width wise, while others are taller for birds that like to fly high.

When purchasing an outdoor avairy, be sure to make sure you’re getting everything you want. Do adequate research on your birds to know what kind of enviornment they like best. Many outdoor aviaries have large boxes fitted into one or more corners where birds can build nests and sleep. These night boxes are essential for birds that like to get away from the sun.

Can I build my own outdoor aviary?

One way to give your pet a happy home is to build an outdoor aviary. While there are plenty of outdoor aviaries for sale, building your own isn’t too difficult and supplies should be available at most hardware stores. Depending upon the size and type of your bird or birds, the kind of outdoor aviaries you want to build will vary. When attempting to build and outdoor aviary there are some key components to keep in mind.

You want to make sure there is a tight seal between the bottom of the aviary and the ground in order to keep rodents out. Building an aviary on cement helps, because if it is simply build on the dirt ground some rodents can dig their way under outdoor aviaries.

You’ll need wire and wood or plastic to build an outdoor avairy. The wire should make up the majority of the walls while the wood or plastic can be used for a roof — afterall, you don’t want your birds to get wet if it rains! You can add to outdoor aviaries with real branches or bird toys like ropes and balls that can be found at most pet stores.
