Where do I look?
You can look for upland bird hunts on the Internet. Because upland bird hunts cover such a diverse part of the country, sometimes it’s best to do a little research on the area you want to travel to. You can go on an upland bird hunt in South Dakota or Vermont and any where in between. It’s really up to you. Upland bird hunts are just considered bird hunts in areas that cater to hunting birds.
Looking for turkeys
Turkeys are popular animals to seek and destroy while on upland bird hunts. Turkeys are not as fast as some of the other birds that you’ll hunt on your upland trip. They’re also delicious when plucked and fried or baked. Male turkeys are much bigger and have the colorful tail feathers that female birds do not have. Keep in mind that wild turkeys will hang out in low tree branches or spend time on the ground looking for food. It’s good to familiarize yourself with these birds and their habitat before going on the hunt.
Pheasant hunting
Another popular bird to seek out on upland bird hunts is the pheasant. The pheasant is smaller than the turkey. It too lives in wooded areas, but it’s much more secretive than the turkey and can be hard to see. When they’re startled, pheasants leap out of the grass and take flight. This method of escape is also startling to hunters so, make sure you’re paying close attention when pheasant hunting or you might end up hitting a fellow hunter.
What to bring
When you go on upland bird hunts you need to bring several things. For starters, you need to pack several different layers of clothing. Your clothing should be breathable and water or sweat proof. You’ll also need thick boots that cover your ankles. Bird hunts will take you in areas that are covered in burrs and other foliage that will prick at your ankles. Do not forget a hat or sunscreen when you’re hunting. Hunting season is from the spring through the fall. This is the sunniest time of the year and sunscreen will protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.
Don’t forget to get the correct gun and hunting licenses and permits before you go on any upland bird hunts. Skipping this important step can get you in trouble or, at the very least, result in you coughing up some money to pay off fees. Upland bird hunts are usually fun adventures, but the adventurer needs to be prepared.
