The three easiest cat
breeds to groom depend a bit on your feelings towards cat grooming. Some
people are not fond of
brushing or
combing cats not matter how much the cats may enjoy it. For
these people, long haired cats are never among the easiest cat breeds to groom.
Other people find brushing cats to be a soothing and relaxing pastime, so any
mid or short haired cat breeds are easy to groom. Still others don’t mind
brushing, but would never want to have to
bathe a cat; for these people hairless breeds are not easy to groom.
Overall, though, based on the amount of time needed for daily grooming, American
Shorthairs, Bombay, and Sphynx cats can be considered among the three easiest
cat breeds to groom.
The American Shorthair cat is the most popular cat in the U.S. and is owned by more families than any other. Known for its longevity and social disposition, the American Shorthair makes a good family pet. They are friendly with other pets and good with children. American Shorthairs do not require much grooming. Occasional brushing will generally suffice. The American Shorthair is officially recognized in more than eighty different colors and patterns. Some popular colors include pure white, black, and classic tabby coloring. The eyes, nose, and pad color of the American Shorthair will always match the coat color. Their coat thickness and texture may vary based on the climate differences in their native region.
Bombay cats, with their deep black coat and bright copper-colored eyes, look
like miniature versions of black leopards from India. Extremely
intelligent and friendly, Bombay cats are affectionate and highly trainable.
They do very well with children, as well as with cats and other pets. The Bombay
cat has a short coat of glossy, deep black. They usually have a medium build,
and generally weigh around 8 to 16 pounds. Bombay have broad muzzles and
medium-sized
ears with slightly rounded tips. Their eyes are copper to gold in
color, with black rims. Their nose leathers are also black, and their paw pads
are dark brown or black. Short-haired cats, Bombay do not require much grooming.
Sphynx cats are also referred to as hairless cats. While most Sphynx cats are completely hairless, some have a very thin coating of fur, often said to resemble the fuzz on a fresh peach. Because they do not have fur to absorb the oils that occur naturally in the skin, Sphynx cats must be bathed regularly. If your Sphynx is extremely resistant to bathing, thoroughly wiping him down will suffice. The main goal is to remove the oily residues left on the skin, to prevent sores from forming. This is particularly an issue in the folds of the cat’s skin.
While ease of grooming can depend on an individual’s own definition, most short haired breeds of cat are considered easy to groom. Since there are many different short haired breeds, there is no definitive answer to which of these is truly the easiest to groom. Based on their affectionate and easy-going temperaments, American Shorthairs and Bombay are among the easiest cat breeds to groom. With its nearly hairless skin, the Sphynx presents a different kind of grooming challenge, but is still an easy breed to groom.
