ImageDog pound syndrome occurs in dogs that don't get enough attention, affection or stimulation. Here's everything you need to know about this issue.

What is Dog Pound Syndrome?

Dog Pound Syndrome (or privation) is commonly seen in dogs raised in a pound. They lack stimuli and tend to have a history of unnecessary hardship and neglect. They are outcasts who are unwanted and often face death when no one chooses them as a pet. Instead of living in a happy, family-orientated environment, they are typically confined to a cage for long hours and get the bare minimum as far as exercise and attention. Even with the best intentions, workers at the pound cannot provide the love, affection and attention that a foster parent can.

The Symptoms of Dog Pound Syndrome

Anxiety is often found in dogs with this syndrome. Due to poor socialization, the dog is anxious about people and loud noises. They also seem lonely. They have sad eyes, a blank stare and show little or no enthusiasm. They may withdraw and curl up into a ball when someone tries to get their attention. They may turn their back to new people as if they are outright ignoring them. They do this to avoid feeling hurt again, or may even be scared of physical abuse.

Help Your Dog Overcome Dog Pound Syndrome

A dog should be able to trust people. A dog may be reluctant to trust again once he has been hurt or mistreated, but there are some things you can do to rebuild the trust. There are many stories about dogs that reach out to someone, feeling almost an instant bond with them.

ImageTo help a dog in recovery, offer plenty of love and affection to nourish the dog back to a good mental state. Words of encouragement, petting, stroking and gentle kisses go a long way in helping the dog to recover.

Offer the dog a safe place of his own. This can be a room, a corner in your house, his own bed, or even a crate. The important thing is that he has a place he can retreat to and feel secure in.

Playtime should include games, toys and rewards. Gradually increase the dog's stamina by working up to a healthy exercise routine for the age and size of your dog. Start with small walks and gradually extant them over a period of time so he has a chance to naturally adjust. Doing these things will help you dog begin to trust people and again and may cure dog pound syndrome.
