Your Dog Will Enjoy a Dog Crate

Don't think of it as a cage for your pooch; think of it as a warm, cozy den to keep him dry and safe from predators. Although domesticated, dogs still carry the old "wolf pack" instincts and truly enjoy a place to curl up from the world. This is why many dog owners are turning to the benefits of a dog crate for their companions.

Purpose of a Dog Crate

  1. A place to sleep - Don't worry about wandering pets at night; keep them safe and secure.
  2. Places to escape from noise, rambunctious toddlers, or crowds - Sometimes even pups need to take a break.
  3. A safe and sturdy way to transport your dog to appointments and on trips - crates even meet federal requirements.
  4. A convenient housebreaking tool - Dogs like to keep their living space clean, and won't usually soil their crate on purpose.
  5. A place away from cushions and newspapers while you're out - Some dogs, left to their own devices, will chew everything in sight. Don't come home to a shredded mess in the living room!

Sizes And Styles Of Dog Crates

So you've decided to get a Dog Crate, usually available in wide supply at pet supply stores, but you're not sure which one to choose? Just remember that, in this case, size really does matter.

Your Dog Crate should be just large enough that your pooch can stand upright and turn around comfortably. Getting something larger than that could cause problems with housebreaking because a dog will soil a space if there's room to get away from it afterward. But don't cramp his style, either.

There are two main types of Dog Crate:

  1. Sturdy plastic crate with wire door - These are great for smaller animals and for pets that will be traveling a lot. They're not really collapsible, but you can take them apart for easier cleaning.
  2. Wire mesh crate - Many dog owners use this type of crate when it's going to stay put. These are usually collapsible, so they do travel, but they're not as safe for animals in airplanes. A wire crate also provides much greater ventilation than its plastic counterpart, so dogs with lots of fur might be happier in this style.

No matter which type of dog crate you choose, you will probably need to give your pet some training at first so he gets accustomed to the new surroundings. But most dogs will be calling their crates "home sweet home" before very long at all.
