Getting Started Dog Hoop trick
Do not attempt to teach your dog this trick until she has mastered such basics as "sit," "stay," and "down." Check with your veterinarian before attempting the Dog Hoop trick if your pet has any health conditions that may stress bones and joints and cause unnecessary pain. Choose a time when you're feeling relaxed, not rushed and easily frustrated. Remember that your dog wants to please you and that teaching her tricks should be an extension of your playtime together. Make sure she has recently relieved herself and isn't hungry or thirsty. Choose a place that is quiet and free from distractions.
Step-By-Step
- First, get your dog used to the Dog Hoop by leaving it around the house for a few days and letting her see and sniff it. You can start with an inexpensive and durable Hula Hoop. Once she seems accustomed to seeing it around, it's time to get started.
- Place the Dog Hoop flat on the ground and lead your dog (on her leash) around and over the hoop. Give her bits of a special treat as she steps over the edges of the hoop. This will get her used to stepping over it without hesitation.
- Once your dog is used to this, set the Dog Hoop on its edge by tying it to stakes in the ground or having someone hold it upright. Just make sure the hoop won't fall over while your dog is stepping through it. With your dog on her leash, command her to sit on one side of the hoop. Toss her leash through the hoop and walk around to the other side. While issuing the command "hoop," gently pull your dog through the hoop. Reward her with praise and a tasty treat.
- Once your dog is comfortable walking through the Dog Hoop, you can begin to raise it off the ground a few inches at a time. Raise the height of the hoop slowly and don't expect your dog to jump higher than she can comfortably. This trick is impressive without it being too risky.
