What Is The Dog Sit Up Command?

A dog that can "sit up" is able to sit upright on her haunches with her front paws out in front of her. It's a starting position for many other tricks, including begging and even saluting. Small dogs usually do much better with this trick; it's a lot harder for large breeds to balance themselves.

Teaching the Dog Sit Up Command

It should be fairly simple to teach your pooch this trick, if she has already learned the basic obedience commands of Sit, Stay, Down, and Up. If your pet hasn't mastered the basics, it might be hard to get her to do anything more complicated. There are a couple ways to teach the dog sit up command:

Method 1

Start by propping your dog up on her haunches in a corner, where she won't lose her balance. Hold a treat above her nose so she looks up to see it. Repeat the command, "sit up," firmly and clearly several times. Don't make her sit propped up for too long of a period at any one time, and make sure to give her plenty of treats and praise when she stays in the upright position. Image

In the beginning, you will probably need to keep one hand on her chest or chin so she doesn't fall forward. With time, however, she should begin to sit up on her haunches much more naturally and her innate balance will take over.

Method 2

In an open space, start by commanding your pooch to sit. When she is in the sitting position, hold a treat over her head so she must look up. Give the command to sit up. If she jumps up to get the treat, simply put her back in the sitting position and try again. When she lifts her front paws off the ground but leaves her haunches firmly rooted, immediately give her the treat and praise her. Eventually she'll get the picture.

Some dogs need a little more help when starting; if this is the case with your dog, hold the treat over her head and gently lift up on her front paws so she understands what you're trying to get her to do. As soon as her front paws are up, give her the treat, even if you're the one holding her paws up. Train her with the dog sit up command over and over again, gradually letting her lift her paws herself.
