Train Your Dog for Peace of Mind
A well-trained dog is a happy dog, because she knows who’s boss and she knows her place in the world. Dogs need a strong leader, and you’ll have to step up and deliver if you want a healthy relationship with your pooch.
Dog Training is important to keep peace in your home. If your pup knows that basic commands of Sit, Stay, Come, and Down, life will be much easier for both of you. Here are a few tips for Dog
Training:
Consistency is the key. Dogs learn quickly, and often read unspoken cues for what’s acceptable in the home and what’s not. If you laugh and giggle at his pillow-chewing, she’ll get the message that it’s allowed, and will continue the behavior. That’s why you should never let her get away with something you don’t want her to do, even once.
Train in short, regular sessions. Your pooch will learn to hate her
training sessions if they last forever. The most effective way to train your dog is to hold regular (daily) sessions of five or 10 minutes apiece.
That way, the training will stay fresh and fun, and won’t become a chore for either of you.
Use lots of praise. Most dogs live for their owner’s approval, and good feedback is the most effective training tool you have. Give her lots of praise and attention when she does something right, and she’ll keep doing it. Treats work well, too, but use them sparingly so she doesn’t always equate obedience with food.
Use books or online help. Get ideas for training techniques in books or Web sites written by professionals. A little knowledge goes a long way toward a well-behaved dog.
