The Benefits of Walking Your Dog

All dogs need exercise, and people do too! A crucial part of every dog's development is regular walks with you. The walks serve a purpose of giving her a chance to do her potty business outside, and also to offer stimulation, exercise, and (of course) your attention.

If your dog is primarily an indoor pet, the outside holds a cornucopia of sights, sounds, and delicious smells that will excite and interest her. It's a chance for fresh air and space to run and stretch those muscles. Unless she has a medical problem, your Walking Dog will probably be the perfect exercise companion for you, too, if you want to get out there and get your heart pumping. It also is a great bonding time for you and your pet.

Teach Your Dog to Wear a Leash

Most communities have some kind of dog ordinances that require pets to be on leashes in public. This means that your pooch must be comfortable on a leash, and know how to behave when she's wearing one. Here are a few tips:

  • Obedience classes are great. Many cities offer low-cost training sessions that cover the basics like using a leash and getting your dog to heel.

  • Don't let your dog set the pace. You should be in control of the direction and speed of your walk. If she begins to pull off in another direction, simply stop and turn around. When you get to your dog and she begins to follow you, give her treats and a lot of praise. The key here is to show her that you are in control, and that walks are no fun when she tries to lead the way. She'll get the idea soon enough, and you'll both be enjoying your walks together.

  • There are a variety of collars available that are designed to stop dogs from pulling you with their leash. These include chain slip collars (or choke chains) and prong collars. If you decide to use one of these training tools, make sure you get detailed instructions on how to use them properly. Ask a professional if you don't know, and avoid causing damage to your beloved pet.

With just a little time and patience, you can turn your dog into a walking dog extraordinaire.
