    The bulldog was first used in the sport of bull baiting. They were treated very cruelly and had to be almost insensitive to pain. In the 19th century, bull baiting was outlawed. If they are left unattended they could drown in bodies of water. Other health problems include cherry eye, allergies, hip problems and cataracts. Usually they have bad breath. Parasites such as roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms are a problem.

    Some exercise is needed, but excessive exercise is not tolerated.

    Regular brushing once a week or with a rough cloth is sufficient. Their wrinkles should be cleaned daily.
