Chinese Crested Breed- Power-puff and Hairless

The hairless variety has hair only on its head, tail and feet. The Powder puff has a long, soft and silky coat.

This breed has a chiseled muzzle and almond shaped eyes; it wears the expression of alertness.

Their neck is lean and their bodies slight.

Although this is the most popular of the breed, it is still very rare.

9.     Habitat:

This is a great apartment dog as it is very active indoors and will be okay without a yard. Very sensitive to extreme temperatures and will need a sweater in the winter.

Chinese Crested - Origins

Africa

2.     Historical Information:

The Aztecs kept this breed as bed warmers. The Chinese trading ships stopped along the African coastline and picked up the dogs because they were excellent ratters.

Chinese Crested - Defining Characteristics

1.     Temperament:

These canines are exceptionally loving and sweet.

2.     Behavior:

They crave constant companionship.

Very easily trained has a willingness for good obedience.

This pup likes to climb and dig.

Chinese Crested - Concerns

1.     Health Issues:

Their exposed skin needs special care; be sure to use sunscreen whenever your pup will be in the sun. Many are allergic to lanolin and wool. Their teeth also need extra care as they do not have a full set.

2.     Exercise Needs:

They enjoy walks but it is not absolutely necessary.

3.     Grooming Needs:

Very clean, these dogs are not prone to fleas or ticks. The Powder-puff variety should be brushed daily and the hairless needs to be bathes frequently and massaged with oil or cream.

4.     Travel Needs:

If in the car, for the safety of you and your pet, be sure to have him secured in a seat belt or crate. Bring plenty of food, water and treats and make sure that your pup has proper identification.

5.     Getting Along With Other Pets and Children:

This breed is very good with children and other pets; you will need to remind the children to be extra careful with the hairless variety.

1.     What to Look for in a Healthy Puppy:

Bright and clear eyes, playful nature, healthy coat.

2.     What you will need for a New Puppy:

Training collar and leash, new dishes, puppy pads and a crate; also, don't forget the toys!!

3.     Puppy-Proofing your House:

As with any new puppy, it is a good idea to get down on their level and check things out. Remember, puppies are curious and, just like a baby, will put anything in their mouth. Be sure to pick up all loose objects to avoid the possible ingesting of something harmful.
