  4. Head & Muzzle: Their head is narrow and wedge shaped. The ears should be in proportion to the head. The muzzle is well rounded and blunt on the end.

  5. Body: Collie's have long and muscular necks. They have muscular bodies that are a touch longer than they are high. They have well-sloped shoulders and deep chests.

  6. Colors: According to the AKC there are four recognized colors. They are: sable and white, tri-color, blue merle and white

  9. Habitat: The Collie will do fine living in an apartment. They are fairly inactive indoors. However, an average sized yard is best where they have room to run leash free. They are sensitive to heat and should be provided with plenty of water and shelter on hot days. Collie puppies housetrain easily. Puppies may tend to nip at the heels of humans but will usually outgrow this.

    The Collie probably gets it's name from those which they were protecting. The black-faced sheep or Colley. Queen Victoria kept Collie's at Balmoral castle which helped to elevate their popularity.

Collie - Concerns

  1. Health Issues:

    Some health problems to look for are PRA and eye defects. Some collies can suffer serious hip defects so you should only buy from a reputable breeder. ImageHave the puppy checked by the vet before you buy it.
  2. Exercise Needs:

    Collie's need lots of exercise and a safe place to run leash free.
  3. Grooming Needs:

    The longer coated collies will need a good brushing once a week. The shorter coated ones can be done every 1-2 weeks. Mats in the long coat can be painful to be brushed out. If you are not showing the dog then these should be cut out. Bathe or dry shampoo only when necessary. They shed their coats twice a year.
  4. Travel Needs:

    For the safety of yourself as well as your Collie, using a safety belt harness is best while traveling in the car. This will keep him comfortable while preventing him from roaming around the car possibly causing injury to himself or others.

    Collie's excellent with children and get along fine with other pets.
