How to Scottish Terrier Grooming

1. The Facts:

   Dogs should be groomed regularly to keep them clean and healthy. Dogs that are not groomed regularly are prone to skin infections and their appearance is also spoiled. Scottish terriers have long hair and if not brushed and groomed regularly, it might result in matting and tangling.

2. Supplies:

   To groom your Scottish terrier, you will need a pin brush, a metal comb, clippers to cut nails and hairs in the pads, a nail file, scissors in case you have to trim the hair, bathing supplies, such as shampoo and towels, and a hair dryer, if necessary.

3. What to Do:

   Take the nail clippers and trim the long toe nails. Long toe nails can harm the dog. Make the nails smooth by using a nail file. Trim the hair of the dog with clippers or scissors. Make sure you are clipping in the direction of the hair growth, i.e., from top to bottom. Brush the hair to remove any loose and trimmed hair. Brushing will also help remove shredded hair. Give the dog a shampoo bath regularly. Make sure you brush and trim the dog before bathing as mats and tangles tend to get worse when the dog is given a bath without brushing first. After the dog has a bath, dry the hair with a hair dryer or towels. Comb the hair with a metal comb.

4. Special Considerations:

   Take the dog to a professional groomer at least twice a year for grooming and trimming. The dog should be brushed and trimmed in the direction of the hair growth. Special grooming care is required when the dog is shredding. Make sure you groom your Scottish terrier between 6-8 weeks to keep the hair from matting. When trimming with clippers take care you don't use a blade that might cut the dog's skin. A #10 blade is the ideal blade for clipping Scottish terriers.

   If you train the dog from young age the dog will be used to grooming and this makes grooming the dog easy and comfortable. You can keep the hair short to prevent it from matting when you are not able to give the regular grooming the dog needs.
