ImagePreparing Your Home For Your New Puppy or Dog

Since you can't always keep an eye on your puppy, it is important to properly prepare your home for the sake of both you and the puppy. The mischief for which all puppies are notorious can be largely avoided if you take the necessary steps to puppy proof your home. Taking some simple precautions ahead of time can save you time, money and needless aggravation.

The Checklist

  • The first step in preparing your home for a new puppy is putting up gates to restrict the dog from entering certain parts of the house. You can also keep the dog confined to a specific room by keeping the doors closed, or by using a puppy crate.

  • Make sure to close up all cupboards and spaces in the areas the dog will be allowed to roam freely. You don't want him climbing into the pantry for a snack.

  • Make an effort to hide electrical wiring by securing it the wall or floor so the puppy can't chew on it. Also remember to tie-up any strings or cords hanging from curtains or window shades.

  • Keep all food on high counters or locked away in cupboards. Do not get in the habit of feeding your puppy "people" food.

  • Puppies will chew up almost anything. Make sure to keep the following items of out reach: magazines, office supplies, tissues, paper towels, toilet paper, blankets, pillows, air fresheners, jewelry, clothes, shoes, hats, medications, soap, cleaning supplies and tools.

    Puppy Proofing Your Backyard

Not only do you need to puppy proof your house, you will need to consider the preparedness of your backyard.

  • Ensure that you don't have any poisonous plants growing in your yard.

  • ImageDouble check for any holes or weak spots in your fencing.

  • Avoid using chemicals on your lawn and gardens when the dog is outside.

  • Don't leave gardening tools or sporting equipment in the yard.

While these precautions need to be taken when first bringing home a new puppy, they are not modifications to your home for which you will need to be eternally committed. With a little training and maturity, your puppy will become more obedient and you won't have to worry about him tearing apart everything in sight. Provide your puppy with the appropriate chew toys to distract him. Teach him what is okay to chew and what isn't.
