1. Problem Definition:

   Pomeranians are usually prone to patellar luxation, collapsed windpipe, cataracts, and entropion.

2. Symptoms:

   You will notice the following symptoms when the dog is suffering from these problems:
   1. If the dog is finding it difficult to move around and it has an improper gait, the dog might be suffering from patellar luxation.
   2. When the color of the dog's eyes changes and when the dog shows signs of blindness, it might be suffering from cataracts.
   3. If the dog is finding it difficult to breathe and if it has a dry cough, the dog might be suffering from collapsed windpipe or tracheal collapse.
   4. If the dog's eyes are tearing a lot and the dog is rubbing its eyes often, there are chances of the dog suffering from entropion. Entropion is a problem wherein the eyelid rolls inwards and the eyelashes rub the eyeballs causing serious problems.

3. Duration of Problem:

   Cataracts and collapsed windpipe need long-term treatments. Cataracts cannot be cured completely and once the dog gets this problem it will remain forever. When the dog undergoes surgery for patellar luxation the dog will be sent home after a few days and then the problem will be cured in a few weeks.

4. Exposure:

   Patellar luxation can occur at birth or when the dog has been involved in any accident. Cataracts and entropion are sometimes genetic and can be inherited from the parents of the dog.

1. The Treatment:

   The dog should be taken to the vet immediately after the problem has been detected. Mild patellar luxation can be treated with medication and exercises, but severe patellar luxation needs surgery. Collapsed windpipe and entropion can be cured only with surgery.

2. Prevention:

   Genetic diseases can be prevented from spreading by not breeding the dogs suffering from these diseases.

3. Precautions:

   If the dog has been treated for collapsed windpipe it is advised to use a harness instead of a leash. The dogs suffering from this problem should be kept away from smoke and dust.
