The dog Chihuahua really does come from the state of Chihuahua. This is one of the largest states in all of Mexico, bordered on the north by the U.S.A.
Being a dog from the state Chihuahua is enough to make one say "Ay, Chihuahua!" (By the way, it is not really how this exclamation joined the language.) Then again, you may say it when you decide the dog Chihuahua is just right for your family.
Before you start seeking a Chihuahua keep in mind that you should
never underestimate this diminutive breed of dog. While they may be tiny, in
their minds they are as big as any Mastiff on the block. They have big hearts
and give -- and likewise demand -- lots of affection and require as much time
and care as
dogs three, four or five times their size -- and are worth it.
One of the keys of sharing your life with a Chihuahua is to ensure its socialization gets as much attention as his or her care and feeding. These dogs believe this is their world, and everyone else, especially other dogs and even children, are just living in it. Because of the breed's assertive nature, it is not unusual for a Chihuahua to get a reputation as being snappish. But, their small but sharp teeth are their only means of self-defense, and sometimes the only way to make their presence known.
From the time you see your Chihuahua as a
puppy and decide that it is the dog for your family, you need to be thinking
of how best to socialize the newest member of your family. The easiest
part is handling the little cutie. They enjoy being held and touched and most
likely will reward you with kisses; they are people-centered pets. Be sure every
member of the family and even friends get involved in your Chihuahua. The more
people they know, the more people they like. Also, cautiously introduce them to
other dogs and cats as well.
However, keep in mind that your Chihuahua may not want to be best friends with every child, dog, cat or houseguest, so be mindful of their protective nature.
The other thing to be aware is that these little dogs have equally small "central heating systems" and need to be kept warm. The state Chihuahua is rather warm. In fact, the Chihuahua Desert is the largest in North America. So the dog Chihuahua needs to be protected from the cold. It is advisable those on cold days, even long-coated Chihuahuas should wear a jacket or sweater outside or even inside if the house is cool. They may also need booties if they are outside in inclement weather.
Like the state Chihuahua, the dog Chihuahua is a joy to behold, and both will make you say, "Ay Chihuahua!"
