Which Breed is Best?

Deciding on the right
breed for you and your family can mean the difference between blissful and disastrous dog ownership.
Sporting dogs - These are the Setters, Retrievers, Spaniels and Pointers. They're bred to hunt and will do so whether you ask them to or not. They need lots of space to explore and exercise their notably sensitive sniffers. Not a good breed to choose if you've got enticing pet birds at home.
Working for a living - Larger dogs such as Dobermans, St. Bernards, Boxers and Akitas are bred to work and need lots of exercise. They are easy to train and make great family dogs and are very loyal. If you buy a
puppy, be aware that he is going to get a lot bigger. Can your house handle it?
Nothing but a hound dog - Hounds are bred to hunt down game by sight or scent. These breeds vary greatly in their needs and common traits. Research carefully before sentencing a natural-born scent detective to a lifetime in a high-rise apartment.
Terriers - This group includes Schnauzers and the sometimes misunderstood Pit Bulls. Most dogs that fall in this category are very active and will need plenty of room to run and play. Some terriers will not take well to sharing their master with other dogs.
Toyland - Toy Poodles, Pinschers, Pomeranians and miniature Terriers are often under 10 pounds and are bred to be constant companions to their caretakers. If you're looking to emulate the latest pop stars who tuck their pups into their
purses, this is the breed for you. Although their size makes them good candidates for apartments, they tend to yap a lot. Consider your neighbors when choosing a
toy dog.
Ask Questions
No matter which breed you decide on, don't get your heart set on taking home a dog that looks good in a classified ad before paying the dog seller a visit. Take careful note of the living and breeding conditions and
beware of phony pedigree papers. Ask lots of questions and gauge the seller's knowledge from the answers. Let the buyer beware, even if the merchandise is absolutely adorable and is licking your face.
