If you're housetraining a new puppy, you're going to need a good Dog Stain Remover. Here's everything you need to know about available options.
Step-by-Step Stain Removal
If your puppy's left a puddle on the carpet try these steps to remove the stain:
Blot up as much liquid as possible with a white cloth or white paper towels. Using colored materials may result in dyes bleeding onto your carpet.
Mix a solution of 1/4 teaspoon mild laundry detergent and 1 cup of water. Laundry detergents contain the same cleaning enzymes as expensive retail pet stain products. Once you've covered the stain, blot up the cleaning solution.
For odor removal, mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1 cup water. Thoroughly blot the pet stain area. Use white paper towels to blot up the vinegar mixture.
Place a few layers of white paper towels over the stain area and weigh them down with a heavy, non-porous object such as a pan filled with books. Change the towels periodically until the stain is dry.
For solid waste stains, follow the same steps listed above after removing as much of the solids as possible. If carpet odors linger, sprinkle the area with baking soda. Vacuum it up after letting it sit all day or overnight.
Stain Removal Products
Enzyme cleaners: These products can be very convenient and effective but can be pricey, especially if accidents are common. If you have the time and want to save a little money, try the home remedy described above.
Spray deodorizers: These products basically cover the odors you're trying to remove. They don't fool your pet's ultra-sensitive nose. Work on removing the odor first and then try a deodorizer. Your best bet may be one of the furniture and carpet odor neutralizer sprays.
Carpet Deodorizers: Baking soda is a very effective carpet deodorizer but the store-bought powders have fragrance added in so if you prefer lavender-scented carpets, try the store-bought variety.
Washing soiled items: If your dog soils a washable item, try rinsing it with a cup of white vinegar (without detergent) in the washing machine first. Then wash as usual.
Stain Prevention
The best way to treat pet stains is to prevent them. Take your dog out first thing in the morning and last thing each night, limit food and water before bedtime and be firm and consistent with house training to deter your pet from leaving his calling card on your new carpet.
