Stain Removal Products
Enzyme cleaners: these products contain enzymes that remove odor by actually breaking down the urine. Look for a powder that needs to be mixed each time you use it so that the enzymes remain dormant until you activate them with water. These enzyme cleaners tend to be more effective than sprays. You can find unscented cleaners that simply neutralize the odor.
Spray deodorizers: Because these products usually just cover up the odors you're trying to remove, they don't fool your pooch's ultra-sensitive nose. The urine odor should be removed first before deodorizing your carpets. At that point, your best bet may be one of the furniture and carpet odor neutralizer sprays.
Carpet deodorizers: Baking soda acts as a very effective carpet deodorizer but if you want floral or sea-breeze scents, try the store-bought variety. Some new powder products claim to actually lift the urine out of your carpet after sitting for 30 minutes or so. Then, you simply vacuum up the powder and the urine is gone.
Cleaning tip: If your dog soils a washable item, rinse it in the washing machine with 1 cup of white vinegar only. Then wash as usual.
Step-by-Step Home Stain Removal Remedy
If your puppy's left a puddle on the carpet try these steps to remove the stain:
Blot up as much liquid as possible with a white cloth or white paper towels. Using colored materials may result in dyes bleeding onto your carpet.
Mix a solution of 1/4 teaspoon mild laundry detergent and 1 cup of water. Laundry detergents contain the same cleaning enzymes as expensive retail pet stain products. Once you've covered the stain, blot up the cleaning solution.
For odor removal, mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1 cup water. Thoroughly blot the pet stain area. Use white paper towels to blot up the vinegar mixture.
Place a few layers of white paper towels over the stain area and weigh them down with a heavy, non-porous object such as a pan filled with books. Change the towels periodically until the stain is dry.
For solid waste stains, follow the same steps listed above after removing as much of the solids as possible. If carpet odors linger, sprinkle the area with baking soda. Vacuum it up after letting it sit all day or overnight.
