Certain dogs cry out for names that rise above the rest. So before you hang any old moniker on your new best friend, think of what makes good dog names so good. Good dog names are unique, well suited to your dog, reflect something unique about you and/or your dog and are appropriate.
There is no reason these great baby names used by celebrities wouldn't also make good dog names. Consider:
- Singer Bjork's son is named Sindri;
- Actor Harry Hamlin has a son named Dimitri;
- The late musical genius Frank Zappa had sons Dweezil and Ahmet and daughters Moon Unit and Diva;
- Tony Bennet's son is named D'Andrea;
- Victoria Adams (Posh of the Spice Girls) and soccer star David (Bend It Like) Beckham have children named Brooklyn and Romeo;
- Alec Baldwin and his now-ex Kim Bassinger have a daughter name Elisse;
- Gillian (Dana Scully) Anderson's daughter is named Piper Maru;
- Princess Anne and Mark Phillips have a daughter named Zara;
- The doubly-cool celebrity couple of Courtney Cox and David Arquette have a doubly-cool daughter named Coco;
- Pierce Brosnan has a son named Dylan Thomas;
- One of uber-cool singer Jimmy Buffet's daughter's first name is Savannah;
- Cool acting couple Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan have daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler -- and son named Sam;
- Jennie (90210) Garth's daughter is named Luca Bella
- And Bob (Boomtown Rats) Geldof has three daughters named, (are you ready?): Fifi-Trixibelle, Peaches and Pixie.
But, celebrities do not have a lock on all the human names that could become potentially good dog names. Not by a long shot -- celebrities' pets themselves offer great inspiration when you are looking for good dog names. For example:
Tennis star Venus Williams has a Yorkshire Terrier named Pete (as in fellow court star Pete Sampras);
- Will Smith's Rottweilers are named Ludo and Zhaki;
- Leonardo DiCaprio's Poodle is named Rufus;
- Charlize Theron has a pair of Cocker Spaniels, Denver and Delilah;
- Glen Close's Papillion has the blue-collar moniker of Petey (not unlike that of the dog star of the Little Rascals);
- Sylvester Stallone's search of good dog names ended with Gangster for his Boxer;
- Fred Durst named his Bulldog Bizkit after his band, Limp Bizkit;
- Mega-celeb Madonna is mommy to a Chihuahua that answers to Chiquita;
- While Brittany Spears' Yorkie is Baby;
- Oprah Winfrey is known for traveling with a pack of pets, including a chocolate Cocker Spaniel named Solomon;
- Guns & Roses guitarist Slash has a Golden Retriever named Belle;
- Martha Stewart often shares her TV show stage with her French Bulldog Francesca.
Or, just look to the celebrities themselves. Here are some suitably good dog names inspired by folks in the spotlights:
- Bono
- Axel (Rose)
- Garth (Brooks)
- Sly (Stallone or Stone)
- Oprah (Winfrey)
- Brittany (Spears)
- Goldberg (the WWE star)
- Sasha (Cohen, the young figure skating champion)
- Venus (Williams or the statue or the planet)
- Conan (O'Brien, not the barbarian)
- Good dog names, like good dogs, are great when you find them.
