The Crufts Dog Show is held each year by The Kennel Club UK. The show is a four day event that includes competitions for the following breed classes: Working and Pastoral Breeds, Terrier and Hound Breeds, Toy and Utility Breeds, and Gundogs. In addition to breed competitions, there are obedience,
agility, and training competitions.
The Crufts Dog Show has been held annually in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham for over a decade and a half. Purebred dog owners and handlers gather from around the world to compete in the breed classes in the hope of being named Best in Show.
Along with the competitions, there is much to do, see, and learn at the Crufts Dog Show. There are hundreds of trade booths selling all forms of dog-related items, from training aids to fashion, and art to agility equipment. There are celebrity speakers and dog training demonstrations, as well as agility and obedience shows.
The Crufts Dog Show is usually held in March and draws as many as 140,000 visitors and nearly 25,000 dogs. The 2006 Crufts Dog Show included dogs from 178 different breeds, traveling from 32 different countries. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Crufts Dog Show is the largest dog show in the world.
The first Crufts Dog Show was held in the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, in 1891. The show was founded by Charles Cruft, who had previously promoted the canine section of the Paris Exhibition during the 1880s. In 1886, Cruft managed the Allied Terrier Club Show, held at the Royal Aquarium in Westminster, before moving on to organize the first of his namesake shows in 1891.
