Eukaneuba Dog Show - Facts
1. Type of Competition:
This is an AKC (American Kennel Club) conducted dog show, usually held once a year.
2. Location:
The Eukaneuba Dog Show is a
national competition and is held at various places around the nation.
It was conducted in Tampa, Florida in January 2006. The next scheduled
Eukaneuba Dog Show is to be in Long Island, California, in December 2006.
3. History:
The roots of the Eukaneuba Dog Show can be traced to the origin of the American Kennel Club in the September of 1884. This dog club was set up expressly to recognize various pure dog breeds and to give characteristics to particular breeds. Now, based on those characteristics several shows are being conducted all over the world. The Eukaneuba Dog Show is a dog contest conducted by the AKC itself. The Eukaneuba Dog Show was instituted by the AKC in the year 2000. It has reached a huge following since then and now holds competitions in 156 breeds. Since 2003, the Eukaneuba Show was shown live on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.
4. Sanctioned:
This dog show is entirely sanctioned and conducted by the AKC. The AKC is today the largest dog breed certifying body in the world.
5. Entrance Procedure:
Entries are based on the number of wins in the past year. Dogs that have had five wins in the open class in the previous year are eligible. Or else, they must have a grade point average of 3.0 in the past two semesters, immediately preceding the date of the competition. There are severe disqualifying rules, especially working class dogs that have been Eukaneuba Dog Show wounded and mutilated are not allowed to be part of the competition.
6. Classes:
There are different classes in winning prizes according to the categories to which dog breeds belong. The main classes are sporting, non-sporting, working, hound, terrier, toy and herding. The following dogs are included in the seven classes:
1. Sporting class -- Labrador retriever, pointer, Brittany, etc.
2. Non-sporting class -- Bichon Frise, bulldog, Dalmatian, etc.
3. Working class -- Doberman, St. Bernard, Siberian husky, Akita, etc.
4. Hound class -- Coonhound, bloodhound, greyhound, wolfhound, etc.
5. Terrier class -- Kerry blue terrier, Irish terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, etc.
6. Toy class -- Chihuahua, poodle, cocker spaniel, King Charles cavalier spaniel, etc.
7. Herding class -- German sheepdog, Australian cattle dog, Beuaceron, etc.
7. Judging:
Judges are selected
according to breed. Different specialist judges are chosen for individual
categories, who decide all prizes within that category.
8. Awards:
The biggest prize is the Best in Show. Other important prizes are Best Bred by Exhibitor in Show, Best Junior Handler, and Viewer's Choice for Best Dog. There are other interesting prizes like Cutest Puppy, Looks like Me, Most Enthusiastic Dog, Best Kisser, Most Athletic, and Best Smile. It is the biggest dog show on earth, if the total of $225,000 given as prize money is taken into consideration.
