Land o Lakes Kennel Club Dog Show - Facts

1.     Type of Competition:

This is an annual dog show that is conducted every winter by the Land O' Lakes Kennel Club. ImageThis is just like any other American Kennel Club sanctioned show with conformation, agility, and obedience rounds. The agility round is the main attraction of this dog show.

2.     Location:

Saint Paul River Center, St. Paul, Minnesota was the venue for this dog show this year.

3.     History:

This is one of the shows that started recently and it is quite famous with more than 3,000 dogs participating this year. The first all junior agility demo was held in January 2003.

4.     Sanctioned:

The Land O' Lakes Kennel Club Dog Show is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

5.     Entrance Procedure:

There is an eligibility criteria for all American Kennel Club sponsored shows. The dog should be eligible according to the eligibility criteria which are: The dog should be at least 6 months or older; the dog should be registered with the American Kennel Club under any of the seven groups; the dog should meet the breed standard requirements mentioned by the American Kennel Club. Apart from these criteria the dog must satisfy any conditions that are given by the dog show authorities.

6.     Classes:

There are seven groups of dogs that can be entered in the dog show. The groups are Sporting group (Golden Retriever, Field Spaniel, Welsh Springer Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer etc.), Hound group (Rhodesian Ridgeback, Afghan Hound, Basset Hound etc.), Working group (Doberman Pinscher, Black Russian Terrier, German Pinscher, Saint Bernard etc.), Terrier group (Airedale Terrier, Cairn Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Scottish Terrier etc.), Toy group (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Manchester Terrier, Shih Tzu, Toy Fox Terrier etc.), Non-Sporting group (American Eskimo Dog, Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier, Boston Terrier etc.), Herding group (Belgian Sheepdog, Old English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh corgi etc.).

7.     Judging:

ImageJudges are appointed for each of the seven groups (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding). In the conformation round they will evaluate the dogs for their appearance, gait, physical attributes and temperament. They even judge the dogs in rounds meant for obedience and agility.

8.     Awards:

Dogs are awarded several awards as they progress in the show and the highest award is the Best in Show award, which is given to the best dog in the whole show. The dog show also has a Junior Showmanship award that is given to participants who are 18 years old and below.
