Rose City Dog Show - Facts

  1. Type of Competition:

    This is an annual dog show that is supported by the AKC and is called the Rose City Classic. ImageThis is actually a series of dog shows conducted by different clubs and hosted by the Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon.
  2. Location:

    The last Rose City Dog Show was conducted in the Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center, Oregon State.
  3. History:

    This is one of the largest dog shows conducted in America. The show is usually conducted for four days every year. On the first day there are 14 specialty shows conducted by 14 different clubs, each judging a different group. On the second and third days, different tests including obedience and agility tests are conducted by the Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon. On the last day, the show is conducted by Tualatin Kennel Club.
  4. Sanctioned:

    All the shows conducted by the different clubs are sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
  5. Entrance Procedure:

    The show has 14 different clubs and the entrance procedure depends on the individual club. The dog should belong to one of the five AKC groups that are judged by these 14 clubs.
  6. Classes:

    Sporting Group (Irish Setter, Labrador Retriever, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Brittany, Pointer etc.), Hound Group (Afghan Hound, Irish Wolfhound, Beagle, Coonhound, Bloodhound etc.) Working Group (Black Russian Terrier, Doberman Pinscher, Great Pyrenees etc.), Terrier (Scottish Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer etc.), ImageToy Group (Chinese Crested, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Pug etc.), Non-Sporting Group (Bichon Frise, Lhasa Apso, Boston Terrier etc.) and Herding Group (German Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, Bearded Collie, Australian Shepherd etc.). Apart from these groups, dogs belonging to Miscellaneous group (Tibetan Mastiff, Redone Coonhound, Swedish Vallhund etc.) are also allowed.
  7. Judging:

    On the first day dogs belonging to five groups (Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Non-Sporting) are judged by different clubs. The rest of the days, dogs belonging to all the eight groups are judged in different tests including agility and obedience.
  8. Awards:

    The dogs are judged group wise and then the Best in Show is awarded. The show also gives awards to junior participants. The dogs are also awarded for agility and obedience. Apart from these usual awards, the show gives the AKC Canine Good Citizen award to a dog for good manners.
