Traveling With Your Dog: A Checklist
Whether you're taking a cross-country road trip or just a day-long jaunt to the mountains, it can be very rewarding to bring your dog along for the ride. Many dogs love to travel, but you can make the trip much easier and more comfortable by bringing the right supplies:
Safety restraints - Never allow your dog to
travel in the car without a safety restraint or belt. You can find a number of restraining devices made especially for dogs in cars, either online or at your local pet supply store.
Favorite toys and treats - Keep a stash of your pooch's favorite items in a bag in the front seat with you. When she gets nervous or restless, calm her down with a small bite of something yummy or her favorite ball.
Leash - This is a crucial item, because you should keep your dog on a
leash every minute she's out of the car. Even well-behaved and trained dogs can get lost or run off in unfamiliar surroundings. Some experts suggest that you bring two leashes. That way, you'll always have a spare if you misplace the first one.
Water and food - Bring 
food and water dishes from home, or invest in a sturdy set of portable dishes for the road. When you take a break at rest stops, make sure she drinks all that she wants to. Try and keep her on a regular feeding schedule; if she acts hungry between feeding times, give her a
treat or two.
Motion sickness medication - Dogs can get carsick just like people do, and the last thing you want is a
vomiting dog in your backseat. Ask your vet for instructions on how to administer the medication (usually a pill) and also what signs to look for so you don't medicate her when she doesn't need it.
