Parakeets need more than just seed in their diet. A food that blends fruits, nuts, and seeds will provide a better nutritionally balanced diet.
Things to Consider:
Empty Hulls - Typically, parakeets only eat the top layer of seed. You should check the food dish daily and remove any empty hulls.
Variety - If trying to decide between a formulated diet and seed mixes, you might want to keep in mind that, while formulated diets don´t need nutritional supplementation, they also don´t offer any variety. However, seed mixes do offer variety but need to be supplemented with vitamins. Neither choice is right or wrong, but that choice is strictly dependant on your own personal preference nor to which your pet best responds.
Phytonutrients - Regardless of which type of diet you choose, you should keep in mind that phytonutrients are a necessary part of your bird´s diet, as they help boost the immune system.
