Read About Choosing Puppy Training

Training puppies is part psychological. It should be a fun time, rather than a time associated with difficult experiences.

Things to consider: Puppy training approaches, how to maintain consistency, and training her to do tricks that have a purpose.

  • Caring Approach - Training puppies should not feel like punishment or work to them. It should be fun. Bring home some tasty dog treats and dog toys from the store for new puppies and incorporate them into your training sessions as training aids. This will help you keep your pup's attention and it will give them an incentive to do as you ask. A light and happy tone to your voice will also help.

  • Mixed Messages - Consistency is one of the most important elements of properly training puppies. If your puppy is getting mixed messages in any way about any sort of behavior, she'll only get confused. It is better to have everyone in your household on the same page about exactly what you expect from your new pup, what behavior is acceptable and what behavior is not. Then be consistent in enforcing it.

  • Tricks with Purpose - After bringing home your new pup from the store for new puppies, remember that training puppies to do tricks -- like Sit, Stay, and Lie Down -- aren't merely for show. Any one of those so-called tricks can save your puppy's life in certain instances, for example having your puppy sit at the curb so she doesn't go into the road and get hit by a car, or having your puppy lie down when a newcomer (human or animal) crosses her path so that neither she nor the newcomer have any provocation to be aggressive. There are a lot more reasons than merely showing off for training puppies.
