Read About Choosing Toys for Puppies

Toys for puppies should be chosen carefully because they don't know any better than to chew and swallow virtually anything they get their mouths onto.

Things to consider: Size of the toys, types of toys, and using toys to keep teething puppies from chewing everything is sight.

  • Avoid Swallowing - Toys for puppies from the store for new puppies should be large enough that your puppy cannot swallow them. Always have some extra toys for puppies around too, so that if your puppy tears a hole in his toy or bites off a piece of it, you can immediately throw it out and replace it with a new toy. You don't want the dog to feel punished for playing, but neither do you want your dog to get in the habit of tearing her toys for puppies to shreds, and if you let her continue to play with a mangled toy, that is exactly what she's going to learn.

  • Toy Types - There are many different types of toys for puppies at the store for new puppies -- latex and vinyl, plastic and rubber, plush and fleece, squeaky toys. Not all puppies are going to like all kinds of toys, so you may have to do a little bit of trial and error at first to find out exactly what types of toys for puppies she likes. Do not try to force your dog to accept dog toys that do not interest her. Find out what does interest her, and then go out and buy more of those. It is a lesson you will hopefully only have to learn once.

  • Destructive Machine - To discourage your new, teething puppy from destroying your belongings, train her to chew her dog toys. While this might seem at first glance unnecessary, you would be surprised how often puppies do not know what to do with these chews toys. Whenever you catch her chewing on something she is not supposed to, entice her away from it with an approved toy from the store for new puppies. Engage her in playing games with you and her chew toys to draw her attention to them. What you are trying to teach her here is that some items belong to her and all others do not. To help anchor this lesson, remember to praise her happily whenever you happen to catch her in the act of chewing her toys for puppies.
