Read About Choosing Garden Pruners-Shears

Pruners and shears are a gardener´s best friends when it comes to giving the garden that trimmed, well-groomed look.

Things to consider:

  • Best for Plants – Pruners that work like scissors are better for plants, because they cause less damage during the cutting process. If you need to prune larger branches (2.5" or more), a pruning saw is the right tool to choose.

  • Proper Maintenance – Keep your pruning tools sharp and in good condition. Pruning saws should be professionally sharpened or replaced periodically. Shears and pruners should be cleaned and sanitized as well. It is inconvenient, but it can prevent the spread of disease to your plants. Microorganisms on tool surfaces can easily infect plants through new cuts when they are pruned. Use 70% denatured alcohol or diluted household bleach to sanitize shears and pruners. Bleach is corrosive to metal surfaces, so thoroughly clean with soap and water when finished with the job.

  • Hedge Trimming Tips – Use hedge shears to keep your bushes growing the way you want them. Do not allow shrubs to grow to their final size before pruning them. Prune them as they grow, and they will form a dense hedge. Use hedge shears to trim the sides so the bottom of the shrub is slightly wider than the top. The best time to trim hedges depends upon the type of shrub and climate where you live, so proper trimming timing requires a little research.
