Read About How Often to Feed Your Older Cat

As your cat ages, she will require a modified diet. Some cats age gracefully and do not develop any health problems or illnesses that require a closely monitored diet. In this case, all you have to do is reduce your cat´s caloric intake. Keep in mind that if your older cat remains active, you should not have to reduce her calories all that much. As you decide exactly how to feed your aging cat, keep the following things in mind:

  1. Remember that your cat's weight is a direct reflection of her caloric intake and the amount of exercise she gets. As cats age, they become less agile and slower. If you do not reduce her calorie intake each day, there is the likelihood that she will gain weight, since she will not be burning off as many calories as she is taking in.
  2. In order to reduce the amount of calories your cat ingests each day, you should simply feed a smaller quantity. You don't necessarily have to cut out a feeding, just reduce the amount you give at each meal. First, reduce her portions to half a can. You should watch how she acts and whether she still seems hungry. If she is hungry, you should give her three fourths of a can.
  3. The amount you feed your cat will vary from cat to cat. There are no specific amounts to recommend. However, you can follow a few guidelines. Remember not to feed her more that she can eat in about 20 minutes. Always remove the bowl and set it out again at the next feeding.
