Would you believe that one of the biggest nuisances of owning a cat has one of the easiest remedies? If it´s 
a cat, then it has or has had hairballs. And odds are, you´ve had to clean up after kitty has hacked one up. It is important that you look after your cat and make sure he doesn´t ingest too much hair. The occasional hairball will not kill anyone but your cat may suffer badly or even die if he swallows too much hair. When your cat grooms herself, hairs from her body stick to her tongue. She will swallow them. In small amounts they will pass right out the other end. However, she cannot pass hairballs. This is why she hacks them up. It is best that she has few hairballs as possible. Perhaps the following tips will help.
- Cats shed all the time. Shorthaired cats shed just as much as the longhaired breeds. It seems like less hair because it is shorter. You should brush or comb your cat at least once a week. This will cut down on the number of hairs your cat ingests.
- If you own a vacuum cleaner, you should vacuum her bed and area
off a couple of times a week. This will help keep down the number of hair floating around your house and getting picked up by your pets coat again.
- You can also keep her teeth brushed. Not only does this help keep the hair intake down, it helps aid the dental hygiene of your cat.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, " someone once said. In this case, it´s worth a ton of cure. Simply brushing your cat weekly will reduce if not eliminate the number of hairballs she coughs up.
