Chewing behavior
The smell of newly picked flowers -- ..the pleasantness of seeing greenery in your living room -- the -- wait a minute -- are those bite marks you see on the leaves of your plant? Ahhh yes, your cat. You and your cat are not alone. It is not uncommon behavior for a cat to chew on plants and household objects. What can be done about chewing behavior?
- Bitter sprays and aluminum foil are two things that can be used to discourage your cat from chewing. Bitter sprays that are safe for your cat can be easily sprayed on plants to curb your cat´s enthusiasm for nibbling on your greenery. If your kitty is intrigued by wires and cords, consider wrapping them in aluminum foil, a noise that your cat will not be fond of.
- Your cat´s desire to munch on your plants is one of instinct. Certain grasses and greenery are actually good for your cat´s digestive system. Consider purchasing fresh catnip and greenery that is safe for your cat to indulge in.
- Sometimes cats chew on plastic, paper or other items simply out of boredom. Spend ample time playing with your cat. In addition to jingle balls and catnip mice, entertain your kitty with items such as a feather tied to a stick that you can pull across the floor, bringing out their natural instinct to hunt.
- Some breeds, such as Siamese cats, are prone to chew certain materials such as wool or leather. It is thought that the cats like the softness of the material, that it reminds them of their early weeks with their mother when they were nursing. Consider buying a couple of toys for your cat that are made out of wool or leather for them to cuddle up and reminisce with.
- There is a possibility that your cat is chewing on other objects to fulfill a nutritional need. There are so many different brands of cat food out there that it can be hard to decide which one is best for your cats. Talk to your vet to ensure you are providing your cat with the proper nutrition. Changing your cat´s food could be the key to curing them of their chewing habit as well as improving their health.
Remember, your cat isn´t chewing on objects to annoy you. It is most likely your kitty´s natural instinct coming out. Providing safe and healthy toys and greenery for your cats will enable them to engage in natural behavior without destroying your belongings.
