Whether you´re cruising down the highway or flying over the ocean, here´s how to make traveling with your cat smooth sailing.
If you decide to bring your cat along on your trip, make sure he is in a cat carrier. If you are traveling by bus or airplane, it is most likely he won´t be allowed on if he´s not in a carrier.
- Before traveling, make sure your cat´s vaccinations are up to date. Make sure to get a health certificate and proof of vaccinations to carry with you. These might be required in some areas you travel through. Always make sure your cat has an identification tag and collar on with your name, address, and phone number in case he gets lost.
- Get your cat used to his carrier by letting him sleep in it. Place a blanket and a few catnip toys in with him.
- To help him get used to riding in the car, take your cat on short trips and bring along their favorite catnip toy and a treat. Include their bed, litter box with scooper and feeding dishes, as all these will give him a sense of calm.
- Look up local Animal Hospitals in the area you will be traveling, just in case you have an emergency.
- If your cat flies as cargo, this can be very upsetting to him. Your best bet is to find an airline that allows small pets in the cabin with you in an under the seat carrier. Make sure you know all the health regulations and requirements at least two weeks before traveling, so there will be no problems when you arrive on your departure date.
- You´ll be relieved to know there are many Motels and Hotels that allow pets these days. Call ahead or search the internet to find them. Make sure you bring your cat´s regular food and bedding with you. Also make sure if you do leave the cat alone in your room to put him in his carrier, just in case the maid comes to clean your room and leaves the door open.
These tips will help you and your cat have a great vacation.
