You´ve got your new kitten and all his belongings and now it´s feeding time. What are you going to feed him? Although many people think cat food is all the same, it is not. Kittens require a special diet. They are growing and need lots of vitamins and nutrients that a grown cat does not. Most cat food companies produce a special line just for kittens. It is important that you research exactly what a kitten needs and find a food that provides it all in one. Commercial cat food will provide all the information you need about their product right on the package. When feeding your kitten you should keep the following tips in mind.
- Always keep a kitten´s food bowl full of food so he can return to it, as he gets hungry. Small cats will eat small amounts at a time but need to eat often.
- You should always designate one place for feeding. To make your kitty table more personal, there are food mats and a variety of bowls out there to choose from.
- You should never place the food and water bowls near the litter box. They should be at least 4 feet apart as no one, not ever your kitty wants to smell the litter box while they eat.
Remember, your kitten will not reach full adulthood until around 2 years of age. At 5 – 6 weeks, you can mash up hard food with a milk substitute for him to eat. Do not ever give your kitten any kind of real milk as it can cause a variety of different problems. At about 6 weeks of age you can slip in several pieces of dry food. By 7 – 8 weeks, your kitten should be eating solid food.
