Read About Biting Dog

A biting or snapping dog is dangerous. Sometimes people have allowed biting in a puppy because it's cute, then when the dog is older, it is no longer cute. An inappropriate behavior has been established that will be very difficult to adjust.

  1. By the time your dog is about a year old, play biting most likely means that the dog thinks he is in charge. When he play bites, he is training you, as far as he is concerned. You need to keep this in mind when you allow your new puppy bite you without repercussions. Yes, it is darned cute, but a dangerous precedent. You and your dog would probably do well to go to some obedience classes. In addition, this training needs to continue in the home. If the training is not consistent, your dog will continue to misbehave.

  2. Spayed or neutered dogs are much less likely to bite. There are many sound reasons to have these surgical procedures performed, one reason being a reduction in biting. This is not just gossip. There have been clinical and sociological studies performed that show the difference in the number of biting reports on altered vs. non-altered animals. The statistics are dramatic.

  3. You need to be sure to give your dog lots of attention and company, which lets them know that biting is an immediate way to receiving no attention from you. When they realize that they will not receive the same amount of attention when they are biting, you will see a marked change in your puppy's behavior. Pups that bite may need to earn everything, such as your attention, before they will probably stop biting. Once the dog knows that you are the kingpin in this relationship, the dog's biting is much less likely to occur.

Firm limits and lots of affection, especially when your dog is being good, will make you and your dog happy in the end.
