You know it is hard for your dog to be home alone all day, but you have to work long hours. What can you do to keep Fido from tearing down the house while you are away?
You know your dog is bored? How could he not be? You work long hours. Unfortunately, if Fido wants to keep up his doggy treat habit you will need to continue to work those long hours. Fret not, there are several things you can do to ease Fido´s boredom.
- First and foremost -- make the best of your time together. Get up earlier and spend some good quality time with Fido, where he gets a lot of physical activity. If he has gotten to connect with you before you leave, and has had a good amount of physical activity it will be much easier to be alone all day.
- Spice up Fido´s toy collection and keep them on a rotation. Your dog has a lot of free time during the day. Whether he is an inside dog, and outside dog or both, he needs a lot of different toys to keep him entertained for long periods of time. If you rotate several groups of toys, Fido will always feel like he has something new to play with. You likely do the same thing with your CD collection.
- Remember that it is OK to ask for help. If you know of a neighbor that is home during the day offer to pay them to walk Fido during the day. If you don´t know anyone who can help, hire a professional pet sitter. There are even doggie daycares Fido can visit during the day. If you do choose to take Fido to daycare, do research the facility and inquire as to what they do to prevent fights.
The above tips should help Fido entertained during the day. Have patience and if the first thing you try doesn´t work, move on to the next idea. You may find that it takes a combination of methods to keep Fido happy.
When stocking your toy collection remember to keep several options for each type of toy that Fido enjoys. For example, several different balls and several chew toys will entertain him far longer than just one of each.
