Read About Dog That Runs Away

Some dogs get a reputation as canine escape artists, when all they really need are consistent boundaries, physical and mental.

  1. Obviously, the best boundary to set for your pet is one done with thoughtful training. A dog that will sit, stay, and come on command is much less likely to go galloping off. If your pup has been trained by with a hint of patient repetition on your part, along with the occasional treat or game, he´ll know how to be obedient and will have learned to overcome the temptation to scamper away.

If you can train your dog yourself, there are many training manuals and programs available to use as a resource. If your training isn´t proving effective, you may with to investigate working with a canine trainer or behaviorist.

  2. Some owners have found that no amount of training seems to curtail their dog´s instinct to run out the door after the random squirrel. This is not uncommon in small terrier types. The only solution for a dog that will only sporadically come when called may be to keep the dog behind a gate, or on a leash, whenever there´s a chance a door might open and the dog could run out.

  3. Do not, however, keep your dog outside all the time. A family pet needs to have constant, affectionate contact with his family. A dog that is outside all the time is never going to socialize properly. A dog with no socialization will be trouble for you, your family, and your neighbors as time goes on. This pup will have no desire to do anything but run, because all this dog knows is confinement.
