Your dog is lying at your feet, sleeping soundly. Next thing you know, he jumps up and starts tearing through the house. Why is this?
One reason could be that he had a sudden burst of energy and needs to burn it off. Another reason could be that he isn't getting enough exercise and this is his way to get some of that much needed exercise.
Many people wonder, how much exercise is necessary? The answer to that question is that all dogs, regardless of breed, need some sort of exercise on a daily basis. Walking is the best form of exercise for your dog although there are many other ways to get that much needed exercise: running, bike trails, playing catch, etc.
The amount of exercise needed on a daily basis varies from breed to breed. The following numbers represent an average amount needed for each classification of dog:
- Toys -- 2 1/2 hour walks
- Small -- 1 hour two times a day
- Medium -- 2-3 hours per day
- Large -- 2-3 hours per day
Ensuring that your animal has the recommended amount of exercise each day will help to make them more healthy and happier. So make sure when you leave today that you have a leash and a collar and take your dog for a walk tomorrow.
