Moving with your dog needs to be planned for, especially if your dog is moving from the only home he´s had since puppyhood. There are a number of things that you can do to prepare your pet for moving, whether it´s across the street or across the country.
- Many experts suggest that, if not done already, you start crate-training your dog as soon as you know that you'´ll be moving. That way, when it´s time to move, your dog will have a secure place to stay. In addition, there will be a familiar place to hang out, even if the house around the "den" is different.
- Similarly, you may want to let your dog explore the new home in stages -- maybe just the kitchen and family room to start, with expansion into the rest of the house. This will allow your pup to explore but not get into trouble. Until most of the moving chaos has settled down, this will be safer for your pet, too.
- To keep your dog´s tummy form reacting to sudden changes, bring some water from your old house and mix it in increasing amounts with the new water supply. Don´t change food, dishes, or toys on your dog. If they see and use their familiar items, they will be able to securely and calmly settle in that much sooner.
- Are you moving some place where you will need new licensing or a veterinary report? Investigate in advance, so you are prepared to help your dog be a good canine neighbor in your new hometown.
