Read About Socializing a Timid Dog

Do you need to learn how to bring your timid dog out of his shell?

It´s hard knowing your dog is scared of everyone and everything. You need to know how to ease his anxiety.

Life with a timid dog has a very unique set of challenges. Afternoons at the park are impossible because your dog is simply too afraid of all the people. Even something as simple as having friends over for dinner causes anxiety for your pooch. You know you need to work on socializing your dog, but don´t know how to do it without making him panic. The following tips will help your dog get used to people. Remember to reward his social behavior with a special treat or toy.

  1. When a visitor approaches have them sit or lie down on the floor. You want your dog to feel that the visitor is on their level. Sitting or lying on the floor will show your dog that the visitor is not a threat.
  2. Instruct the visitor to never look your dog in the eye. They can observe the dog through their peripheral vision. A timid dog perceives eye contact from a human as a challenge and will only further his anxiety.
  3. Warn visitors not to touch the head or the neck of the dog, this is imperative. A timid dog sees this as a threat and may growl or snap in retaliation. Visitors can still touch the dog, but they should reach around from the side and pet his body.

Socializing your timid canine friend will take patience and the understanding of any visitors to your home. Your guest´s cooperation will help ease your dog´s anxiety and fear of strangers. Some dog´s timid nature will require professional help. If the above tips do not seem to be helping your dog, take him to a veterinarian to rule out any medical condition that could be causing shyness. Epilepsy, thyroid problems and other medical conditions can cause strong mood changes which appear to be shyness. If a medical condition is ruled out and you still need help, consult a professional animal trainer.

As with all types of dog training you must reward your dog for the desired behavior. Anytime your timid dog exhibits social behavior, reinforce that behavior with a reward. Rewards can include dog treats, new toys and praise.
