Read About Traveling with Your Dog

When you make your list for vacation this summer don't forget to pack for the family pet, too. Yes, he can travel with the family on vacation. It is important to remember that Fido will have needs just like the rest of the family. One of the most important is to make sure he gets plenty of water along the trip. Try the following tips when traveling with the dog.

  1. Frequent stops along the way are a must. If traveling on state highways use the rest areas along the way. When he gets out, he will want to explore so be sure he has his leash on. Offer plenty of drinking water several times while outside the vehicle.

  2. There may be times when stopping isn't possible. For these instances, I recommend bottled water, a small dish (such as a saucer) and plenty of paper towels. When traveling through the night, you can simply offer pooch a few sips and use the paper towels to soak up any leftovers or spills. Depending on how far away from home you are traveling, it is also important to carry enough bottled water to last your dog throughout the entire trip as foreign water can cause irritable bowels and upset stomach for your pet.

  3. You should never lock your dog inside the car even if you roll down all of the windows. Keep Fido tied to a secure spot if there is someone to keep an eye on him. If not, take him into the restroom with you and hook his leash on the door handle.

Traveling with the family pet can be a fun and appropriate option. If you remember to make adequate preparations there is no reason your experience shouldn't be a pleasant one.
